Reduced parking fees for Christmas
Thursday 13 October 2011
Coventry City Council will show its support to city centre traders this month, as a number of proposals to reduce car parking charges are set to be agreed at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday 20 October.
The proposals will again see free parking in the build up to Christmas on Wednesdays after 4pm between 23 November and 21 December 21, helping shoppers during the Christmas late night shopping period. As well as the free Christmas parking, reduced charges for parking between two to six hours on Saturdays in certain car parks are also proposed. The reduced charges will be in place from November 2011 through to June 2012 while work is underway on a £7 million package of improvements across the city centre.
Councillor Linda Bigham, Cabinet Member for City Development said, "I'm really pleased that we can show our support to traders and shoppers in this way. I know how disruptive the improvement work to Broadgate and other parts of our City Centre has been to traders and shoppers alike and I hope this package of offers will encourage people to continue shopping in our city during the Christmas period and beyond."
The new Saturday parking charges will apply at car parks on Bishop Street; Cheylesmore; Christchurch House; Cox Street; Lower Ford Street; Manor House and New Union Street. The new charges will be:
Current Proposed
Charge Charge Reduction
Up to 1hr £1.00 £1.00 No change
1 to 2 hrs £1.80 £1.80 No change
2 to 3 hrs £2.30 £2.00 £0.30
3 to 4 hrs £3.00 £2.50 £0.50
4 to 5 hrs £6.00 £3.00 £3.00
5 to 6 hrs £8.00 £6.00 £2.00
The proposals also include a new weekly ticket (available from the ticket machine) for people who work in the city centre which will be made available at four city centre car parks.
These tickets will cover parking from Monday to Sunday but can only be used at the car park at which it was bought. The car parks included in this scheme are Bishop Street, Gosford Street, Grove Street and Whitefriars Street and will be available from week beginning 21 November 2011 through to June 2012. Weekly tickets will cost £10 - a saving of £30 a week for anyone parking all day, five days a week.
Councillor Bigham continued, "This weekly ticket offers real value for money and I hope it shows our commitment to supporting the city centre and the people who work here. People are putting up with a lot of disruption and times are hard so I hope this proves to be a real incentive to people to spend a bit of what they save on parking in our city centre over lunchtime or after work."
