Volunteers needed for ethics committee

Published Monday, 20 March 2017

Coventry City Council is looking for up to three people to act as Independent Persons in connection with the work of its Ethics Committee.

The Committee promotes and maintains high standards of conduct among elected and co-opted members of the council and parish councils in its area.

Although the role of the Independent Person is voluntary they would be eligible for travel expenses where appropriate.

A key part of the role will be to give their views on allegations of misconduct by elected Members, which the Council has decided to investigate.  He or she may also be consulted by members of both the City Council and parish councils who are the subject of an allegation of misconduct.

The Independent Person also has a role in disciplinary matters involving senior council employees. This involves being prepared to sit on a panel appointed to make recommendations to the Council on whether disciplinary action should be taken.

If you have a strong interest in promoting and maintaining high standards of ethical conduct in public life, and can bring your expertise and knowledge to this important and challenging role then we would like to hear from you.

The amount of time required for the role will vary from year to year but would include being available to attend four committee meetings a year each lasting between one and two hours.

If you are interested, an application pack can be obtained by contacting Helen Lynch, Acting Monitoring Officer on 024 7683 1587, helen.lynch@coventry.gov.uk or downloaded from the Council's website at www.coventry.gov.uk/independentpersons
