Cllr Tony Skipper to become next Lord Mayor

Published Tuesday, 09 May 2017

City of Culture advocate and Coventry Councillor for over 20 years, Councillor Tony Skipper, will become Coventry’s next Lord Mayor, at an official ceremony on Thursday 18 May 2017.

Tony Skipper was born in Norwich and after achieving an undergraduate degree at the local University of East Anglia he came to Coventry in 1979 to study for a postgraduate degree at Warwick University. After successfully achieving this he decided to stay and make Coventry his home.  In 1995 he became a Councillor for Earlsdon Ward for four years and in 2001 was elected as Councillor for Radford Ward, where he has served ever since.

Councillor Skipper said:
“I am honoured to take on the role of Lord Mayor and this year will take on added importance for me as we take the city further forward as a contender for the 2021 City of Culture.  Coventry is a very diverse city with both young and old, but we must continue to look ahead and not get too nostalgic so we don’t halt progression. There’s so much great work being done out there already and I’m looking forward to helping celebrate the talents and achievements of those in our city.”

In addition to his role as Ward Councillor, Tony was previously employed as a photographer and he maintains his commitment to the arts by serving as a Board Member for the Belgrade Theatre, Culture Coventry and also the West Midlands Arts Council.

To start this year in office, Tony has organised ‘Rock the Ruins’ - a concert in the Cathedral Ruins to raise money for his selected charities Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

At the Mayor Making ceremony on 18 May, Cllr John Blundell, current Ward Councillor for Wainbody, will become the next Deputy Lord Mayor.
