Winter gritting
Friday 25 November 2011
Coventry City Council is stocked up and well prepared to keep Coventry moving in the event of another harsh winter this season, by making sure salt levels are at an all time high.
The purpose-built salt barn based at Humber Road has been filled to capacity with over 5000 tonnes of salt to help with gritting our roads should we have another severe winter.
Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: "We are determined to keep Coventry's roads open during the winter months, and have stock-piled gritting salt to ensure that we have enough, even if we get arctic conditions."
In previous years the typical quantity stored in the salt barn has been 2,000 - 2,500 tonnes, so this years amount of 5300 tonnes will ensure that we will be able to keep our main roads open and moving in the event of a winter that is even more severe than previous years.
