Thousands watch lights switch-on

Published Thursday, 23 November 2017

Thousands of people joined in the Christmas festivities at the city’s big switch-on in Broadgate last night.

Lights switch on

‚ÄčThe annual festive event is always a big attraction and last night was as popular as ever, with many families and children braving the poor weather to make the most of the evening’s entertainment.

Celebrity Alesha Dixon joined the city’s Lord Mayor, Father Christmas and Free Radio presenters, JD and Roisin in switching the lights on. Alesha then performed in front of the crowds in Broadgate to bring the evening’s entertainment to a close.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Tony Skipper, said: “Last night’s switch on was another great event for the city and despite the poor weather, it was great that thousands of people came out to enjoy the evening.

"There was an excellent selection of local and national talent on show and the crowds there certainly seemed to enjoy what has become a big annual celebration in Coventry.

"It was also really pleasing to see so many families come into the city centre and I hope people will continue to come in for the Christmas period to support local businesses.”

The Christmas switch-on was jointly organised by Coventry City Council and Coventry BID and also featured performances by local acts such as Coundon Primary Choir, Elite Dance and a magical performance from Vortex Creates and Highly Sprung called ‘Ready, Set, Snow! Christmas is go!'
