Changes to the Ionising Radiation Regulations

Published Friday, 19 January 2018

The Health and Safety Executive have recently updated the regulations relating to the storage and management of radioactive materials.

As you may be aware the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have re written the Ionising Radiation Regulations, which became effective in January this year. As part of this employers need to re-register their radioactive sources with the HSE by 6 February 2018; this includes all LA Schools, Free schools and Academies who hold a stock of radioactive sources used as part of the science curriculum.

CLEAPSS have produced a guidance note and information that can be downloaded from the front page of their science website to assist you in the registration of your sources. As part of the registration process HSE ask a question about RADON. The guidance note and information provides information to assist you in answering this question. Please can you ensure that your science staff re-register any radioactive sources the school holds before the 6 February 2018.
