A ‘food scanner’ app has been created for Change4Life which works by scanning the barcode of products and highlights the number of calories, as well as how much sugar, saturated fat and salt is in everyday food and drinks.

Families will also be shown how to swap to healthier snack options using front of pack ‘traffic light’ labels.

The roadshow is visiting 30 supermarkets and 14 shopping centres in hope that more families will look at how much sugar their children are consuming.

Public Health England are encouraging parents to look for a maximum of two, 100 calorie snacks for their children, per day. This is because half of the sugar children consume comes from unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks, leading to obesity and dental decay.

Dr Lola Abudu, PHE West Midlands Director of Health and Wellbeing, said: “Changing our children’s snacking habits can be a real challenge and we want to make it easier for families to find healthier options. By asking parents to ‘Look out for 100 calories snacks, 2 a day max’ we’re helping them to give healthier snacks, while giving them less frequently.”

Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member at Coventry City Council for Public Health and Sport, said: “We can all make changes to our eating habits, and paying closer attention to sugar content and calories in food is vital. I’m glad that supermarkets are taking steps to make shoppers more aware of what’s in the products we all buy on a daily basis.”

The Change4Life Food Scanner app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
