Safety alert - fire risk from classroom heater covers and surrounds

Published Friday, 02 March 2018

Fire started in classroom by storage heater surround cover.

Please see the attached safety alert.

A small fire occurred in an Oxfordshire Primary School portakabin classroom recently, where a storage heater surround made of MDF caught light. Fire investigators identified that the fire started as a result of radiated heat, which caused the surround to decompose and smoulder.

All schools should carry out an urgent check of their premises to identify if any classrooms have similar wooden types of heater covers used with Dimplex storage heaters. If they do, heaters should be switched off, not used and covers should be removed as soon as possible. Arrangements should be made to replace these covers with non – combustible ones.

Seek competent advice where necessary to ensure replacement covers are non – combustible and meet fire safety requirements.
