Parade and civic reception for victorious Sky Blues

The Lord Mayor is to host a civic reception tomorrow (Weds 30 May) to celebrate Coventry City securing promotion back to League One.

The event will follow an open-top bus parade that will take in parts of the city before arriving in the city centre.

It will give people the chance to show their appreciation to the team, who were roared on by almost 40,000 fans to a famous 3-1 victory at Wembley yesterday.

A bus carrying the Sky Blues will set off from the football club’s training ground in Ryton at 5pm. It will then travel along Oxford Road and London Road at normal speed, slowing down where there are crowds from St James Lane.

The bus will then travel along Langbank Avenue, Princethorpe Way and Binley Road, turning right onto Hipswell Highway.

The Sky Blues’ bus will then turn left onto Ansty Road, travelling along Walsgrave Road and Sky Blue Way before entering the city centre on Gosford Street.

It will then travel along Jordan Well, Much Park Street, St Johns Street, Little Park Street, New Union Street, Warwick Road, Greyfriars Road and Queen Victoria Road.

The bus will then travel along Corporation Street, Hales Street and Trinity Street before arriving in Broadgate at around 6pm where it will stop. Afterwards it will travel along High Street to arrive at the Council House at about 6.30pm.

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor John Blundell, will then host the players and Sky Blues’ staff at a civic reception at St Mary’s Guildhall.

He said: “It was a tremendous performance and achievement by the Sky Blues and it is only right their well-deserved triumph is recognised in this way.

“I’m sure the streets will be lined with thousands of people wanting to celebrate promotion with the team.

“It will then be great to host the team at a civic reception afterwards to formally pass on the congratulations of the city and, on a personal note, a wonderful way to start my year as Lord Mayor of Coventry!”
