Plans for the region’s first Go Ape in Coventry

Published Monday, 02 July 2018

Coventry City Council has been in talks with top visitor attraction Go Ape about bringing the region’s first Go Ape to Coombe Country Park - that could be in place as early as April 2019.

The move would create around 30 jobs and a new tourist destination for local people and visitors.

Go Ape is the UK’s leading Forest Adventure company providing a variety of challenges and adventures up in the trees amidst some of the country’s most breath-taking scenery.

Go Ape has Tree Top courses to suit children and adults alike, offering an exhilarating experience in the great outdoors of flying down zip wires, leaping off Tarzan swings and navigating obstacles and rope crossings high above the forest floor. Currently the nearest Go Ape is at Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.

Go Ape is a multi-award-winning provider of high rope adventures in the UK. They have established 33 sites in the UK and 16 in the USA and celebrated their 8 millionth visitor in the UK in 2018.

Cllr Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader at Coventry City Council said, “I’m delighted that Go Ape think Coombe could make a great location for their brand and style of adventure. They are a perfect fit. Coombe is a jewel in our crown and it’s rightly much loved by local people and visitors who all enjoy the natural beauty of the 500 acre site.

“And it’s the sheer scale of Coombe that means Go Ape will work here. Nestled in the trees it will offer high adventure and fun for children, young people and adults alike without impacting on the areas of the site that are enjoyed by bird watchers, nature enthusiasts and walkers.

“Coombe has a lot to offer and Go Ape will add a really exciting new element. I can’t wait to see the plans I hope people take the chance to go along and find out more.”

Coombe Country Park is an award-winning venue that is popular among visitors and is home to the 4-star Coombe Abbey Hotel.

The plans are subject to planning approval. Prior to submitting their planning application, Go Ape have liaised with Natural England and Historic England to ensure the course complements the existing character of the park. A team from Go Ape will be at Coombe Country Park between 12noon and 4pm on Friday 6 July and 9am to 4pm on Saturday 7 July to talk about the plans and answer questions.

Ben Davies, Head of Business Development at Go Ape, said: “Go Ape is about encouraging people to live life adventurously and we are looking forward to bringing our Park Adventure experience to Coventry, a unique experience of zip wires, swings and rope crossings.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity at Coombe Country Park and hope we can bring a challenging, adventurous and fun activity to the Coventry.”
