Whittle Arch road closed for improvement work
Friday 23 December 2011
The road under the Whittle Arch will be closed from Tuesday 3 January to Sunday 15 January 2012, to carry out improvements, primarily aimed at making the area more attractive and safer for pedestrians.
The work will include:
* Building a pedestrian refuge in the centre of the road at the Transport Museum side of the arches.
* Replacing the big stainless steel flower planters with less obtrusive and more attractive features
* Amending one of the corners, to allow buses emerging from the Whittle Arch to turn left towards the ring road.
* Removing the protruding sandstone wall at Priory Place, which forces pedestrians into a pavement so narrow that they sometimes spill into the road.
* Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Cllr Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: "The improvements will make the area safer for pedestrians, more attractive to the eye and better suited to bus movements."
