The Festival of Running is almost here!

Published Thursday, 14 March 2019

This Sunday (17 March), Coventry’s Festival of Running 2019 will begin, with over 2,000 children taking part in the Toddler Dash and Children’s Mile in Memorial Park.

It will close the following Sunday, with over 4,000 runners taking on the GoRun 5k Fun Run and Coventry Half Marathon.

Runners are expected to raise tens of thousands of pounds for more than 50 charities, including the event’s four partner charities Myton Hospice, Penny Appeal, University Hospital, and Zoe’s Place.

In response to the incredible support shown for the event, the organisers have extended the sign-up deadline to midnight on Thursday 21 March to ensure as many runners as possible are able to take part.

Event organiser Millie Mac said: “The Festival of Running is a fantastic way to get all of the city involved in celebrating and enjoying fitness, we have everyone from those who’ve never run before through to elite runners taking part.

“It’s been incredible seeing our runners train over the last six months: trying their first ParkRun, taking on Couch to 5k, joining a running club. In our Year of Wellbeing it’s been great to see the impact that an event like this can have beyond the event itself.

”The response to the event has been amazing, we have so many new runners signing up to take part, and the entries are still coming in so we’ve decided to keep entries open for a few more days to allow as many people as possible to be part of this celebration of sport.”

Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Cabinet Member for Events, said: “It’s great to see thousands of people of all ages taking part in Coventry’s Festival of Running this month.

"The variety of events and activities taking place over the next two weekends fit really well as we celebrate our year as European City of Sport and mark our Year of Wellbeing here in Coventry as they provide opportunities for the whole community to take part in physical activity and exercise.”

The event has been organised by Coventry University Students’ Union in partnership with Coventry City Council and has support from local businesses and charities including Medwell Hyde, Coventry College, Coventry Runner, Exasoft, the Skydome, and BBC C&W.

Entries close at midnight on Thursday 21st March. See the website to enter and for more information.
