Coventry celebrates record results in secondary performance of 16 to 19 year olds
Thursday 26 January 2012
The new Secondary Performance Tables show that over 86% of Coventry 16 year olds achieved at least five good GCSE or equivalent passes.
At Key Stage 4 (16 year olds) over the last 10 years there has been a doubling of the numbers of students achieving this success from just 43% in 2001. Furthermore over 54.7% (a 3% point increase) achieved 5+A*-C including English and maths.
All Coventry schools have exceeded the 2012 national floor target of 40% of students achieving 5 A*-C (incl English and Maths) one year early.
- % five or more A*-C (including English and maths): a 3% point rise from 51.7% to 54.7%
- % five or more A*-C (in any subject): a 3.8% point rise from 82.2% to 86% which exceeds the national figure of 80% by 6 percentage points.
- % five or more A*-G: a 1% point rise from 94.7% to 95.7% which now exceeds the national figure of 95.1%
- Average total point scores rose from 332 to 344 which is equivalent to every pupil improving 2 of their GCSE's by one grade.
- % A*-C in maths: a 2.1% point rise from 59.5% to 61.6%
- % A*-C in English: a 4% point increase from 62.1% to 66.1%
All Coventry schools have had a focus on removing the barriers to learning for our most vulnerable Coventry children. The results for these children have improved greatly over the past two years. In particular, our children on free school meals achieved 10% better in 2011 than 2009.
At Key Stage 5 (Post 16)
- The number of students studying at schools and colleges continues to increase and they are all achieving better grades with a rise in achievement of the equivalent of half a grade per entry.
- More students are staying on in schools to complete A levels and vocational qualifications and the overall pass rate has been maintained at 97%.
- This year there has been a two fold increase in the number of entries for vocational qualifications in schools with an increasing pass rate of 96%
- The number of 16-19 year olds starting apprenticeships has also increased with 29% more places over the last 3 years. The success rates in 2008/09 are high at 77%, a significant increase over the last 3 years and above the national average.
Councillor Lynnette Kelly, Cabinet Member (Children, Learning & Young People) said: "These are outstanding results for the young people of Coventry, their families and schools.
"I am delighted to see our young people reaching new heights with their achievements with a record number young people gaining 5 high grade passes. I am particularly pleased at the 10% rise for our children on free school meals as it is a priority for us to improve outcomes for all our vulnerable young people."
Since last August results have been finalised with schools in the autumn term.
Councillor Kelly continued: "It is also very pleasing that there are record increases in higher grade passes for the core subjects of English and maths. These performance tables confirm the exceptional set of results we reported last August.
"It is the result of a lot of hard work by the students and the support they have been given by their families, teachers, schools and the Local Authority. My congratulations go out to all of them."
