Celebrating the story of Women's Football Exhibition
Wednesday 18 July 2012
To mark Coventry's participation in the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer, the city is hosting a contemporary art exhibition titled 'Moving the Goalposts'.
The exhibition, hosted by Coventry University's Lanchester Gallery and curated by local Coventry artist Colin Yates, showcases the hidden history of British Women's football from 1881 to the present day, combining art and sport within a wider cultural setting, which makes for a powerful and "must see" exhibition.
Running from the 24 July to the 12 August 2012, the exhibition ties-in with the Olympic Football competition taking place at the City of Coventry Stadium.
One of the artists showcasing her work is Jaskirt Dhaliwal, and for the 'Moving the Goalposts' exhibition, Jaskirt photographed Coventry City Ladies specifically to celebrate the city's involvement in the London 2012 Olympics and in celebration of local footballing talent. Jaskirt's most recent projects include 'Everyday Olympian' and 'Women's Football' bodies of work.
The success of 'Everyday Olympian' has seen it exhibited at The Drum Arts Centre in Birmingham, Foto8 Summershow 2012 in London and featured in the Sunday Times Magazine. It has also won the Magnum Showcase with Ideastap and continues to garner interest. The Everyday Olympian work was commissioned by Kalaboration and supported by the Cultural Olympiad.
Councillor Mal Mutton, Chair of the Cabinet Advisory Group for the London 2012 Olympics said:
"I'm looking forward to seeing the exhibition first-hand when it starts its run in the city next week. As part of this special year for Coventry, the exhibition celebrates the long history of Women's football in the country and the local links here in the city. The fact that the city plays host to seven Women's matches provides an excellent backdrop to what I'm sure will be an interesting exhibition."
The exhibition is a joint project between Coventry City Council and Coventry University and is also supported by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA).
The exhibition will be showing at Coventry University's Lanchester Gallery situated in Jordan Well.
Admission to the exhibition will be free, with opening times of Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
