Coventry's Paralympic flame celebration

Coventry has been chosen as one of 36 communities across the country that will host Flame Celebrations for the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay as part of the programme of events taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

 The Coventry celebration will be held at the London 2012 Live Site, Millennium Place on Saturday, August 25, 2pm - 5pm. Lord Mayor Cllr Tim Sawdon and Rita Thompson, Coventry's former Paralympic Gold Medallist and Paralympic Flame Ambassador will accompany local Paralympic legends for a packed afternoon of sport and entertainment:

  •    Have a go sessions with a range of Paralympic sports
  •    Entertainment from artists including the Notables and Freefall Dance Company
  •    Blue Badge holders free parking at Pool Meadow ( Cox Street ) and Bishops Street car parks.

Sue Bent, Chair of the Equalities and Community Cohesion Theme Group of the Coventry Partnership and Paralympic Flame celebration steering group chair said," I'm thrilled that Coventry is hosting a Paralympic Flame celebration, firmly placing us on the London 2012 map as a co-host city. Coventry is already well known as a cohesive and diverse city and I'm in no doubt that many people will want to join in the Paralympic celebrations and even take the opportunity to have a go at some of the Paralympic sports which will be showcased."

Director of Paralympic Integration at London 2012, Chris Holmes, said: "We are thrilled  that Coventry will play host to a Flame Celebration, riding on the success of the Olympics. Flame Celebration events are a new concept for London 2012, and will see people from all around the UK   celebrate the spirit of the Paralympic Games in unique ways relevant to their area. I know that people from Coventry will get involved in this celebration and help ignite passion for the Paralympics across the UK as they have done for the Olympics."
