Godiva in the Square

Wednesday 15 August 2012

A day of live music, performance and celebration entitled "Godiva in the Square" is set to bring the heart of the city to life on Sunday 23 September.

Running from 12noon to 10.30pm, the event, organised by the Council's Events team, sees a mini festival day in the city centre featuring some of the bands who did not get to perform at this year's Godiva Festival.

In the spirit of the original festival, and to build on the feelgood factor in the city post-Olympics, there will be a variety of performances ranging from headliners The Subways and The Twang, through to some of the best local bands in the area, including Godiva Unsigned winners Dark Actors, alongside Bollywood-style dancers, and Reece Bahia, winner of a recent Young Entertainer of the year show hosted by The Rotary Club of Coventry Jubilee.

Councillor John Mutton, Leader of Coventry Council, said:

"I'm delighted that Broadgate will be playing host to what we hope will be another exciting addition to our 2012 events programme. We want to ensure the vibrancy of the city is maintained and enhanced following the hosting of the Olympics here in Coventry.

A further motivation behind the day is to provide a stage for some of the local bands and performers who didn't get the opportunity to play this year's Godiva Festival. I'm aware some people were disappointed by the decision to cancel the event and nobody was more disappointed than ourselves, and the large number of people who had put so much effort into planning and organising the event - let's hope all those taking part have a great day.

The event also presents an opportunity to celebrate lots of Coventry and Warwickshire based talent not only from the local rock scene but a variety of musical styles including Bollywood and gospel. So I hope people will come along on the day and enjoy a great day's entertainment in the heart of our city."

One of the major benefits of an improved Broadgate is to provide a large event space where live events and entertainment can take place. With the entertainment continuing until 10.30pm, visitors will also be able to see first-hand the improved night-time lighting further enhancing the atmosphere for the event.

The event will be a free open event, with drink and food also available.
