Free school meals for a week for every new reception starter

Tuesday 18 September 2012

Every new primary school starter is being given the chance to try school meals free of charge for a week as part of an initiative by Coventry City Council's Schools Catering Service and the NHS.

The 'munch time' menu has been taste-tested by groups of primary school children and has been developed in accordance with the Government's nutritional standards so that parents can be sure that their child is eating a healthy, balanced meal, as well as being something that children want to eat.

Karen Huxtable, Head of Schools Catering, said:  "Parents of new starters can often be nervous about whether their child will enjoy their lunch and so this gives them the opportunity to try the food and lunchtime dining experience for free.  Department of Health studies have also shown that children who eat school meals are often more productive and find it easier to concentrate in the classroom, so there are additional benefits from having school meals and we're inviting people let their child try them out for a week for free."
