Monday 22 October 2012

The eighth annual Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards ceremony took place last week, with a total of three winners from the Coventry area.

The awards, which are organised by Coventry University and supported by regional partners, aim to highlight those who have made a tremendous contribution to sport at all levels as well as celebrating outstanding sporting success across the region.

During the evening at St John's Hotel on Warwick Road in Solihull, there were four awards handed out to Nuneaton representatives, three for Coventry, three for Stratford, two for Solihull and one for Rugby with four more shared across Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth.

Among the award winners were Warwick University-based Paralympian and wheelchair tennis star Dani Caverzaschi, who picked up the Higher Education Sportsperson of the Year award, and TST Taekwondo Coventry, which picked up the Team of the Year Award.

Cllr John Mutton, leader of Coventry City Council, collected an award for Coventry after Olympic Football in the City was named as the sporting occasion of the year.

He said: "I think this award is just the icing on the cake. I actually think it's the pride that Coventry people felt and experienced from hosting the Olympics that made this year so special.
It wasn't just a sporting event and there were so many highlights. A particular moment which stands out for me was our involvement in the Cultural Olympiad through the Godiva Awakes project when we had representatives from 12 of our twin cities here."

The event is managed by a representative group of six partner organisations, led by Coventry University, including BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, CSW Sport, Coventry City Council, Coventry PE and School Sport Partnership and Nuneaton and Bedworth Leisure Trust.

The event is also supported by Coventry City Football Club, Kitlocker.com, Decathlon, Ricoh Arena, The University of Warwick, Coventry Sports Foundation and Coventry Sports Trust.
