Coventry artists jam together for a good cause

Tuesday 23 October 2012

Over 30 local performers are coming together under the banner of Oxjam Coventry this weekend to raise money to save lives around the world.

Titled Oxjam Coventry Takeover 2012, three live music venues in Earlsdon, Albany Social Club, The Cottage and Faktory, are playing host to 33 local artists on Saturday 27 October all with the aim of supporting the national Oxfam charity to raise vital money for tackling poverty around the world.

Among the performers performing on four stages in the three venues are up and coming musicians including Rebel Life, Charles Dexter Ward and The Imagineers, The Bluebeat Arkestra and The Jar Family. Alongside these artists are some more established acts such as Shackletons, The Glassguns, Subzero and Nina Baker.

Jamie Conlon, one of the Oxjam Coventry Takeover organisers said:

"We will be raising money for Oxfam's work fighting poverty around the world and what better way than to have lots of local performers playing live across three venues in the city.

Oxjam nationally is growing every year and we wanted to play our part here, for the second year running, in Coventry with this Takeover Day. So please show your support and come along and support the local artists."

Nationally, there are around 47 teams throughout the UK putting Takeover Events on in October. Supported by Q Magazine, Sir Peter Blake, and celebrities such as Jarvis Cocker, Fatboy Slim, Hot Chip, Basement Jaxx, and The Kooks, Oxjam is the UK's biggest music festival line-up.

Councillor Ed Ruane, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure for Coventry City Council added:

"It's great to see a number of local artists coming together to raise money for such a worthwhile cause and that a number of local venues are playing host to some really good live music. I hope the event proves popular and people go along support such a worthwhile venture."

Tickets costing £3 each which will provide a wristband to get people into all the venues and acts over the day are available at http://www.wegottickets.com/
