Holyhead Road Improvements
Wednesday 25 May 2011
Coventry City Council is set to improve Holyhead Road with a £1.5 million package that includes upgrading traffic lights and pedestrian crossings and repairs to roads, pavements and verges.
This is on top of the plan to replace every single one of the street lights on this main and well used route into the city centre.
All six sets of traffic lights on the route will be upgraded thanks to a grant from the Department for Transport for improving traffic lights across the West Midlands.
The rest of the work will be paid for from a range of grants and will also include the removal of unnecessary signs and other street clutter. Together this package of improvements will help to improve safety for all road users as well as keeping traffic moving into and out of the city.
The work will start with the replacement of the street lights which will be followed by the road resurfacing and traffic light upgrades and completion set for before Christmas.
Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: "I am delighted that this work is about to start. It really is a complete package of improvements - and together they will help us to improve safety, journey times and the overall appearance of this very well used route into the city centre. This is particularly important as we get ready to welcome the world in 2012.
"Our own road team will do much of this work. We will try our best to keep disruption to a minimum and any diversions will be clearly signed, although there will, of course, be some short-term disruption I hope people will bear with us."
