The proposals
For a long time, we have been open and transparent that Coventry City Council - like many other local authorities of all political colours across the country - are facing severe financial challenges.
This includes high inflation and social care costs which have been building for years.
This year we have received slightly more funding than we expected from the government. This has given us more headroom in setting our budget than we thought, but is not enough to address the problems we continue to face and political lobbying continues on this.
As a result of the additional funding and our organisation’s careful management, we won’t have to make quite as many savings this year as we thought we might have to – and for the first time in many years there is the chance for extra £2m investment into areas such as highways and fly-tipping.
Despite the improved financial position, the Council will still be forced to announce an increase in Council Tax and we will still have to make some savings which include:
- Improving efficiencies in Children’s social care.
- A rise in Council Tax
- A reduction in Senior Management capacity.
- Taking a new approach in Adult Social Care.
- Increasing the price of services offered by our Bereavement Services. This will rise by 5% alongside inflation.
