Joining the Coventry Health Challenge is a great way to kickstart your way to better health, and being in the best health you can matters now more than ever. Eating better, getting active, quitting smoking, and keeping up to date with vaccinations, especially getting your flu jab are just a few, but effective steps that will really boost our resistance to any future illnesses like COVID-19.
In Coventry, we want to make sure those in our communities that may be more vulnerable to COVID-19 and Flu such as older people, those that are obese, and those with long-term health conditions are as healthy as they can be as we head into winter.
What you eat, and how much, can affect your health and waistline. Small changes can help you lose weight and improve your body’s ability to fight serious illness, like COVID-19. Having a long-term health condition doesn’t have to hold you back, small amounts of gentle exercise add up. Whether that’s walking your dog or using Coventry’s parks, walking routes, and outdoor gyms, we can all be active. Improving your health will have a significant impact on your long-term health and reduce the risk of a more serious illness as a result of the virus.
For many, the past few months have been a wake-up call, with people realising how precious their health is and recognising that it is time to get back on track. Extra weight can make it harder to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and COVID-19 because it causes pressure to build up around our vital organs making it more difficult for the lungs to get oxygen around the body. When it comes to exercise, some is good, but more is better – the more time you spend being active, the greater the health benefits.
We will be challenging you to practice self-care and take responsibility for your health as we head towards the end of 2020 and into 2021. Each month will follow a theme:
You will be set a challenge to work on improving your health in manageable stages, this will include advice and tips, checklists, case studies, and signposting on social media.
We can all do our bit to stay fit and healthy, to help protect us from coronavirus complications and alleviate pressure from the NHS. It’s important to know what you want to achieve when it comes to your health and if you slip up, it is okay just add some small changes back into your routine again. Taking on just one challenge however big or small could make all the difference in kickstarting your health.
Why not make a pledge for the Coventry Health Challenge and commit just one thing today? It’s all about prioritising your physical health and setting goals. Being in the best health you can matters now more than ever.
