Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention.

When someone with COVID-19 breathes, speaks, coughs or sneezes, they release small particles (droplets and aerosols) containing the virus. You can catch it by breathing in these particles or touching surfaces covered in them. You are more likely to catch the virus when you are physically close to someone especially indoors and in crowded places.

Older people and those with long term health conditions such as heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, blood disorders or cancer you are more likely to develop serious illness.
