A castle lost for hundreds of years - the original building is believed to have been constructed on the site in the 11th century, at the time of King Henry I.

Hod 25 2019

The present castle is thought to have been built sometime in the 1380s by Sir William Bagot a distinguished nobleman of the time. He is thought to have entertained Richard II there. The castle subsequently passed through several hands and eventually became derelict in the 16th century.

The current site is set in 19 acres of pasture land and it is likely that it was originally motte fish ponds which have been restored as a nature habitat.

Artefacts and photographs from the excavation work carried out are on display in the Visitors' Centre along with the history of the site. Walk along to the ruins of the Castle and Summer house, visiting the Bagot goats and Herdwick sheep on your way then continue to stroll along the River Sowe and visit the fishponds. Picnic area with seating available. Also on site is the former tank testing area used by Alvis Motor Company for testing of military vehicles.
