Completed improvement works

Whittle Arch / Fairfax Street improvements

Following our work to improve a number of areas across the city centre - creating wider pavements and narrower roads and reducing vehicle speeds - we are set to make some improvements to the area around the Whittle Arch and Fairfax Street/Priory Street junctions. This improvement scheme is almost complete and all resurfacing work on Fairfax Street has been completed. Minor snagging work and the installation of the final pieces of new paving have now been completed.

One change to a 'splitter island' outside of Pool Meadow bus station is needed, but this will have no effect on traffic movement through the area. Thus will take place in January.

The work included:

  • Realigning the kerbs at the Whittle Arch and the entrance to Pool Meadow opposite Priory Street – this will also create a wider pedestrian section under the Whittle Arch so that people can safely cross the road in two parts
  • A new pedestrian guard rail and improved paving at Whittle Arch
  • Levelling the area outside Britannia Hotel
  • A new Zebra crossing to the right of Britannia Hotel
  • A new pedestrian refuge at the Fairfax Street entrance to Pool Meadow
