The home library service is free and available to any person who has a disability which makes them housebound, so they are unable to get to a library, and live within the boundary of Coventry. If this is you, or someone you know, they could benefit from receiving a monthly collection of items from the library service. The items are picked from the shelves of a community library, based on your preferences, and delivered to your home on a monthly basis by volunteers from Age UK Coventry. The items can be books, including large print books, talking books and other information. You can also request any item free of charge and there is no limit (within reason) to the number of items borrowed or delivered once a month.
The volunteers from Age UK Coventry are interviewed and have to provide character references. They always work in pairs, for safety and security reasons, and carry Age UK I.D. badges. The service runs on weekday mornings throughout the year; as far as possible we try to fit in with your appointments.
While we try to target the most needy, you do not have to be totally housebound in order to receive the service - for example, many people can get to a library by some means but cannot carry the books home. Also, although the general guideline for Age UK is serving people over 50 years old, some of our customers are disabled below this age.
If you express an interest in the home library service, you will receive a visit from an experienced and trained volunteer from Age UK Coventry to get information on your needs and reading interests. This information is treated as confidential and filed with Age UK Coventry and the community library your items will be sent from. You can also contact us as a family member, friend or neighbour as long as the details you provide are for the person who would like to receive the service and it is done with their consent.
If you have received items in your last delivery that you were unhappy with, or want to change your preferences so that you receive different genres or authors, then you can contact us to amend your preferences.
If you no longer want to receive the home library service, you can contact us to cancel the service. You can also contact us if you are a family member, friend or neighbour of a home library service client who has passed away.
The home library service is delivered in partnership with volunteers from Age UK Coventry. Age UK Coventry need volunteers for every aspect of their work in the city, including the delivery of the home library service.
