Launched by Her Royal Highness Duchess of Cornwall on 25 May 2021, One Million Reads Coventry is aiming to reach 1,000,000 reads by May 2022! A ‘read’ is any published story, poem, or article you have read or heard.
Get free books from your library and read, listen, or download them to be part of the challenge! You can count your reads towards the One Million goal by visiting your local library, collecting your tokens, and slotting them into the display. Watch the installation at Central Library unfold, as each milestone is reached!
As a part of the One Million Reads project, Coventry Libraries have commissioned a professional photographer to capture the joy of reading across the city. Local photographer, Russell Whitehead, will visit four libraries in Coventry, taking portraits of members of the public to reveal the positive impact reading can have. Following photography shoots at libraries in Coundon, Bell Green, Willenhall and Stoke Aldermoor, an exhibition of the final photographs will go on tour around the city.
Cllr Dr Kindy Sandhu, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “The One Million Reads project hosts a really exciting programme of events and I am so pleased to hear that we now have Russell on board to capture these joyous moments.”
“We are certain to see the enjoyment that reading can bring to many of us, young and old, through Russell’s photography and how the power of storytelling can have such a strong impact on our wellbeing.”
“The exhibition of photographs that will be moving around the city will be a fantastic edition to our year of the City of Culture 2021 with a legacy beyond.”
One Million Reads is a programme of arts and culture projects, which place reading and libraries at the heart of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021/2022. It is funded by Arts Council England.
Once confirmed, the dates of the photography shoots will appear below. To register your interest in being photographed, please email [email protected], or pop into one of the libraries.
Those photographed will also receive a free printed copy of their portrait to keep.
