Secondary school admissions - latest news

COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Please note: For in year transfer applications we do not expect to be able to make offers of school places until schools reopen fully following the COVID-19 (coronavirus) closure. If we are able to make an offer of a school place any earlier we will contact parents via email.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, all members of the School Admissions Team are currently working remotely. Whilst we are working to try and continue providing a good level of service, some of our processes have been affected and others are taking longer to complete.

Applications for children starting Secondary School in September 2020

Offers were made on 2 March to all those who applied before the deadline on 31 October 2019.

All late applications received from 1 November until 15 March 2020 are being considered in the second allocation round as planned and you will be contacted with information about the outcome of your application as soon as this work has been completed, this will be by email in the first instance. If you have not yet applied for a place please click this link Make a late application.

We will continue to accept and process late applications.

If you are not satisfied with the decision, you can discuss your concern with a member of staff in the School Admissions team, change your preferred options or register an appeal to an independent appeal panel. Staff in the School Admissions team will advise you on the steps you need to take to do this.

Further information in response to Covid-19 shut down of schools:

Schools usually contact parents during the summer term to discuss arrangements for admission in September. In the current circumstances we cannot advise when schools will return to their normal opening, and how they will be setting up arrangements for reception/Y7 starters. Schools will have details of all families whose children have been offered places and they will make contact directly with you as soon as they know what the arrangements will be. They will also update school websites with information.

Can we contact the school directly now we have been offered a place?

The school you have been allocated will contact you directly with information regarding your child starting with them. Many schools are under pressure trying to operate a childcare service for children of keyworkers so please do not contact the schools about your child’s start date unless they specifically ask you to.

If I want to appeal when will my appeal be heard?

You will still need to submit your appeal by the relevant deadline (details on appeal web pages for LA and/or individual schools). The government will be providing advice on any changes to how appeals will be dealt with and we will update the council website with any information. Once you have made an appeal the school/appeals teams will contact you with information about the date and arrangements for your appeal.
