Helen attended Tile Hill Wood, and was kept a year behind to support her learning process. Although Helen has Downs Syndrome, she is a high functioning, pleasant and very sociable young person. She attended a Hairdressing course at CWT, one day a week during Key Stage 4. During this time she achieved her Level 1 NVQ qualification, and after attending a summer bridging programme offered through Work Related Learning, progressed to a post 16 Hairdressing course at Heart of England Training Provider.
Helen thoroughly enjoyed her work related learning course becoming the star student at CWT. She found the environment supportive, with parents and school being kept informed of her progress and any additional needs she required whilst at CWT. The Work Related Learning Service was able to provide additional funding support through the Pre NEET European Social Fund project.
Allowing Helen to attend a work related learning programme secured her a place post 16 on a course at Heart of England Training and built on her existing employability skills in order to progress. At HOET, she gained a work placement working in their own salon, to complement her post 16 hairdressing course. She has now secured work as a receptionist in a salon in Leamington Spa.
