WRL Provider - SB2SU

Step Back to Step Up is a small charity based in the heart of Coventry City Centre. They work with young people of all ages to build on any confidence or self-esteem issues.  SB2SU help give young people direction and ownership of their futures, encouraging them to gain independence in their life. Step Back to Step Up work with the most vulnerable young people both boys and girls. They currently have referrals from Wyken Pru, The Link and Ernesford Grange but would welcome more students from mainstream schools too. Their courses can be accredited or non-accredited dependant on the schools wishes. The courses are based around Hair and Beauty.  To retain students the learners cover various units: including: Professional Make Up, Spray Tanning, Tinting, Waxing, Massage, Occasional Hairstyles, Washing Hair, Blow-drying Hair, Acrylic Nails and Shellac.

One of our Successes

At the start of this learner’s journey, her attendance was poor and her attitude was awful.  Academically she was top of her class.  She lived with her dad, so never had any "mum/girl time". She was drug dependent and was getting help for this.  Initially she was difficult to engage, but with the persistence and the kind nature of Step Back staff, they finally won her around. The learner started to attend school regularly, and made sure she went to every session and she excelled in all areas of the hair and beauty program. She also acted as a mentor to the other learners, encouraging them to pay attention and work more efficiently, and guided them through certain aspects of the course.  Currently, this learner is at college and is volunteering for Step Back to Step Up as a peer mentor.

The young person said “Step Back staffs were so easy to get along with and I am honoured to now be a volunteer for them! They have helped me a lot with moving forward in a positive manner and helped me keep out of trouble.”
