‘Superkids – Breaking away from Care’ – In their own words

Introduction

Lemn sissay channel4 207

In February 2018 Coventry’s Children’s Services embarked on a project that would end with a group of the city’s talented children in care featuring in a primetime flagship Channel 4 arts documentary.

It began with an approach from Expectation Factual with an idea for a film that would allow young people in care to talk about their lives in a unique and creative way.

Award-winning writer and performer Lemn Sissay was on board to share his own experiences of growing up in care and to give the young people the tools and confidence to express their experiences through poetry.

The result is the emotional, hard-hitting and Bafta-nominated ‘Superkids – Breaking Away from Care’.

To follow are first-hand accounts of John Gregg, Matt Clayton and Jessica Thompson, some of the people involved in the film.
