Work experience

Work experience is a period of supervised work, introducing you to the world of work, helping you understand the work environment, choose future careers, prepare for employment and increase your knowledge and skills.

We recognise the important role work experience can play in career development and offer placements across a variety of departments and roles within the organisation. Work experience is a period of time spent in a workplace for those who are:

  • Still in full time education
  • Looking for a career change
  • Job Seekers trying to get back into employment.

Complete the work experience application form.

National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP)

Local councils are looking for the next generation of managers to lead critical projects and services that have tangible, everyday outcomes for people's lives. The National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP) seeks to match bright, passionate graduates with councils where they can deliver key projects and amazing value for money.

Coventry City Council partners with the Local Government Association and takes part in the scheme every two years. Currently, we have three NGDP graduates that work across different services areas.

The National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP) website has more updates and details on the application process.

Work placements

A work placement is a work-based placement, offered by an organisation, usually lasting for a fixed, limited period. For unpaid work placements, we do not make any salary payment and there is no employment contract.

For example, a placement may be work experience / training organised by Job Centre Plus for an unemployed young person aged under 25 to help them into employment or a 12-week placement offered to a university student as part of their degree course. Depending on circumstances, we may refund travel expenses for attending the placement, or this may be paid by the Job Centre. Normally, no other payment can be made.
