COVID-19 (Coronavirus) community response guidance for volunteers

Personal safety

In order to stay safe whilst volunteering to help others, volunteers should take steps to ensure their own safety, including:

  • Consider working safely in pairs (though ensuring that if you are not from the same household you stay 2 metres apart and do not share a car journey)
  • Not placing yourself in positions where you may feel unsafe, for instance helping late at night
  • Where possible carrying ID to identify yourself
  • If in doubt please don’t do it and never put yourself at risk. Simply say the request for help will be passed on and we will get back to them.

It is also important that you take care of your own mental wellbeing. MIND has suggested a number of ways to support your own mental health and wellbeing, including:

  • Connect with people digitally, make plans to video chat with people you’d normally see in person
  • Build physical activity in your daily routine such as dancing to music, cleaning your home and following online exercise workouts
  • If news stories make you feel anxious, think about switching off or limiting what you look at
  • Plan a daily routine
  • Find ways to relax and be creative at home
