GCSE maths classes

How much will the course cost?

If you do not already have a grade ‘C’ GCSE in maths (or grade 4 if you’ve studied the new curriculum), then the course is free. (We claim funding from the Government)

If you have a grade ‘C’ (or grade 4) GCSE in maths and are looking to improve your grade, then there will be course fees (£350) plus the exam and administration fees (£45). If you have a low income you may be able to apply to the Learner Support Fund to pay your costs: we will discuss this once you have passed the assessment.

Where/when will the course be?

We are offering the following GCSE Maths classes in the 2019 - 20 academic year:

  • Tuesday 9.15am - 11.45am Harp Place (CV1 4DX)
  • Wednesday 6.30pm - 9pm Stoke Park School (CV2 4JW)
  • Thursday 9.15am - 11.45am Muslim Resource Centre (CV6 5EE)
  • Thursday g 6.15pm - 8.45pm Harp Place (CV1 4DX)

Our term dates will be:

  • Autumn - Monday 16 September - Friday 20 December (13 weeks) (Half term 21 October - 25 October)
  • Spring - Monday 6 January - Friday 10 April (13 weeks) (Half term 24 February - 28 February)
  • Summer - Monday 27 April - until the exams.

The exam dates have yet to be confirmed, but are usually at the end of May/beginning of June.

Do you offer childcare?

We have a crèche service available for the daytime classes at some venues, please make sure you tell us at your assessment if you need a crèche place.

What are the entry requirements?

To secure a place on the course you will need to pass an assessment that requires you to be working at around Level 2.

Your English needs to be good enough that you can understand what is being said in class and can read the exam paper (so should be at least level 1).

Will there be homework? How hard is the course?

This course covers the entire school maths curriculum in under 75 hours of teaching. That’s a lot to get through! Most of our students find the course quite demanding.

You will be expected to complete homework every week. You will often find that you need to do extra study and practise before you are able to complete the homework.

You should allow for at least 5 hours of home study a week.

How do I enrol?

Prospective GCSE learners should have a minimum of GCSE grade D/3 or Functional Skills level 1 and must pass a pre-course assessment before starting the course.  If you have been away from education for a while or have no qualifications but are confident in your every-day skills, come and talk to us.  Passing the pre-course assessment is the criteria for being offered a place on a course.  We will take learners for ONE GCSE only.  However, if you are uncertain which GCSE to apply for, you are welcome to sit both assessments to enable you to make an informed decision.

Pre-course assessment dates and times: end times are the latest you can arrive to begin the assessment.

What do I need to bring with me to the assessment?

You will need to prove you are in the country legally (because otherwise we can’t claim funding from the Government). To do this we need to see some ID.

  • If you were born in the UK please bring your birth certificate, driving license or passport.
  • If you are an EU citizen please bring your passport/ID card
  • Otherwise, please bring a residents permit, passport with visa or whatever documentation you have that shows your resident status.

We will also need your National Insurance Number.

This isn’t the course I’m looking for. What other maths courses do you offer?

We also offer Functional Skills maths courses.

Can I come to resit my GCSE maths with you in November?

Sorry, we only do resits for students who studied GCSE with us last year.

Do you take private students for your exam sessions?

No.  We only allow students enrolled on one of our GCSE maths classes to take the exams with us.

What exam board do you use?

We use the AQA exam board.
