National Apprenticeship Week

Alistar - a day as an apprentice

Alistar Burton

My name is Alistar Burton and I am a few months into my third year apprenticeship with Coventry City Council. I’m based at the War Memorial Park, working as a Garden Maintenance Apprentice.

I started working at War Memorial Park at the beginning of October 2017, after completing a 2 year apprenticeship course in Level 2 Horticulture at Canley Crematorium; I’m now into the start of studying Level 3 Horticulture.

During my Apprenticeship

Over the previous six weeks, I have had to attend college twice a week studying functional skills in Maths and English, the other days I’m at the park, working to keep it clean and help maintain it to a high standard. My college assessor has also challenged me to learn as many plant names as I can, which is quite challenging because I also need to know the Latin names and their pronunciation.

A day working in the park

My working day starts at 7.30am each day, so I need to be prepared, focused, and ready for the day ahead. My day’s tasks can include:

  • Litter picking
  • Preparing the beds for plants
  • Weeding
  • Trimming hedges
  • Planting flowers/plants
  • Taking deliveries
  • Mowing the grass

Highlights of being an apprentice

While I have been working as an apprentice for Coventry City Council I have experienced many highlights on my journey. They include:

  • Being able to better myself
  • Gaining more experience and skills
  • Improving my confidence
  • Meeting new friends
  • Gaining more qualifications
