When I had completed my GCSEs I knew that I wanted to start working straight away. I began working for Coventry City Council's City Services Advice Centre in 2004 aged 16 fresh out of school and still awaiting my exam results.
I applied for the apprenticeship as I wanted to learn more about the Customer Services element of the council and how complaints and queries were handled behind the scenes.
A typical day as an apprentice involved me completing filing and administrative tasks and also dealing with incoming and outgoing mail. Later in my apprenticeship I began taking calls from members of the public and allocating their queries to the correct department to deal with.
I enjoyed my apprenticeship as it helped me develop my skills and learn more about the world of work. I was very inexperienced when I began working for Coventry City Council as I had never worked anywhere else before, however I was supported throughout by everyone I worked with.
10 years later I am still working for the same department as a Team Leader. I now manage a team of 11 people and in the past have managed my own apprentices. I enjoy managing apprentices as I think with my own experiences I can relate to them and understand the barriers they may face.
