Stoptober 2018

Published Monday, 08 October 2018

Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge from Public Health England, is up and running! If you're taking part in Stoptober this year, we wish you the best of luck on your quitting journey.

Just remember, there are lots of ways to quit and Stoptober can help you choose what works best for you. Stoptober offers a range of free support to help you quit including an app, daily emails, Facebook Messenger and lots of encouragement from the Stoptober online community on Facebook.

In addition, you can get expert face-to-face advice from local stop smoking services. Those who use stop smoking aids and who get face-to-face support from their local stop smoking service are up to four times more likely to quit successfully.

As part of Coventry City Council's support for Stoptober, Tom Evans, from the Public Health and Insight Team has agreed to be the face for our campaign and take part in this year's Stoptober in a bid to cut the bad habit for good.

Tom's motivation to quit is all about health, he wants to be a permanent non-smoker and feel liberated from cutting out the habit.

Now that Stoptober is here, we checked in with Tom to see how he feels about his challenge.

How are you feeling now Stoptober is here?

A little apprehensive, but pleased I've made the decision.

Do you believe taking part in Stoptober will help you become a permanent non-smoker?

You've got to start somewhere. It's given me a bit of kickstart, the trick is sticking with it. It doesn't matter what time of year you stop, you just have to give yourself some lad in time and a quit date.

Do you have any coping mechanisms in place to help you if you face any challenges along the way?

The Stop Smoking people have provided me with the opportunity of using gum, lozenges and sprays – which might be helpful in first few days. I think I will need to change a few routines early on.

Are there any words of motivation you would give to others joining you in their Stoptober journey?

Good luck. Maybe see it as a liberation.

If you, like Tom, want to quit smoking this year, it's not too late to get involved with Stoptober. You can find all the relevant information on the ONE YOU website and also find out more about our very own provider, Healthy Lifestyles Coventry and how they can help you.

Don't forget to look out for motivational messages across our social media channels throughout October too!
