A statement from Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council:

Councillor Abdul Khan

"The brutal and senseless attacks in New Zealand are a stark reminder to us here in Coventry that we should, together, continue to promote solidarity.

Words cannot bring back the men, women and children who died in the two Christchurch Mosques terror attacks but we can draw on the support of all our communities to challenge hatred.

In Coventry we want to encourage people to report any hate crimes and to provide reassurance to anyone who feels vulnerable.

Although we will never be able to understand what motivates someone to commit such horrific atrocities we can all as individuals, communities and organisations do all we can to promote respect and unity.

That's why we will continue to be a city of peace and reconciliation."
