Plug in for Clean Air Day

Published Monday, 17 June 2019

Drivers of electric vehicles are being invited to plug in for free and help celebrate Clean Air Day.

All drivers can get a free 20 minute fast charge this Thursday (20 June) as part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the issue of air pollution..

Coventry is leading the way in electric vehicles and is increasing the number of charge points across the city. The free charge is a way of thanking drivers for making the switch and helping the city’s work towards cleaner, healthier air for all.

Cllr Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, is calling on as many drivers as possible to take part and show the city’s support for electric vehicles.

She said: “This initiative is a great way to get people thinking about Clean Air Day and considering how our individual actions can have a huge impact on air quality.

“Electric vehicles are a fantastic way of reducing emissions and considering the environment every time you drive – and I’m sure that the free charge will be very popular.”

ESB EV Solutions and Siemens are working with the Council to install 39 rapid charging points across the city. So far 19 are up and running and will be available to drivers on Thursday. They are:

  • Binley Road (car park), CV1 5EA (two chargers)
  • Manor Road, CV1 2FZ  (one charger)
  • 2 Greyfriars Road, CV1 3RY (two chargers)
  • Trinity Street, CV1 1FJ (two chargers)
  • Queen Victoria Road, CV1 3HX (two chargers)
  • Croft Road, CV1 3AZ (one charger)
  • 1 Lower Holyhead Road, CV1 3AX (one charger)
  • Far Gosford Street (car park), CV1 5EA (two chargers)
  • Cecily Road, CV3 5LG (three chargers)
  • Clay Lane (car park), CV2 4LL (three chargers)

Drivers already registered can just use the chargers as normal and the first 20 minutes will be free.

Those not yet registered should download the EV plug-In app available from the Apple app store or Google Play store or at www.esb-evsolutions.co.uk. They can then sign up as a PAYG, member or taxi.

The free offer applies to all sessions started between 00:01am and 11.59pm on Thursday.

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest annual awareness-raising day to combat air pollution.

It brings together individuals, communities, businesses, education and the health sector to: improve public understanding of the sources of air pollution and explain some of the ways we can protect the environment and get a little healthier.
