City’s sixth formers buck national trend with increase in top grades

Published Thursday, 15 August 2019

The city is celebrating the success of its sixth formers once more as A-Level results are in.

Pupils in Coventry have good reason to be proud, with 97.5% of students achieving an A*-E grade, an increase of 0.1% compared to last year.

At A*-A, 16.8% secured top results, a 0.3% increase, compared to a decline nationally. The percentage of students achieving the highest grade in their A-Levels, an A*, is 4.2%.

The majority of Coventry schools either improved on last year’s results or performed as well as last year, with some schools gaining their best A-Level results ever.

The number of students achieving a pass in vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Diplomas, has risen from 97% to 98%.

Students taking the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) achieved a 100% pass rate, as did all students who took the BTEC Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to 2 A-Levels).

Cllr Kevin Maton, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Pupils, school staff and families should be immensely pleased with this year’s achievements.

“After investing two years of time, effort and dedication into study, these results reflect the hard work that has gone into them. Students in the city have continued to achieve amazing things, with many schools exceeding even last year’s results, especially at the top grades, A*- A.”

“Results day can be a time of massive highs and lows, but it’s important to remember that no matter what the results sheet says today, there are many ways that you can achieve your aspirations – whether that’s university, FE colleges, apprenticeships or employment.”
