During October half-term, music production team from Get it Loud in Libraries (GILIL) will be delivering a free week long programme of music and creative activities including song writing, drumming, rapping, beatboxing, music journalism and photography workshops.

The GILIL Academy Music Camp will be running in Coventry Central Library from the 21-25 October and will be open to young people between the ages of 12 and 18.

This National Foundation for Youth Music supported project gives children and young people the opportunity to work with music industry professionals to produce new music, improving their existing skills and developing new ones. They will also learn about the different career and study pathways open to them in the creative industries.

Cllr Kevin Maton, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said:

“We’re fortunate to have a fantastic amount of young, talented people in Coventry and it’s great that our libraries can provide opportunities for them by working with brilliant organisations like Get it Loud in Libraries.

“Ahead of our year as the City of Culture in 2021, it’s vital that we continue to make use of all our important cultural assets that can help to nurture the immense talent we have here in Coventry.”

“This music camp is the perfect opportunity for young people to learn more about the music industry while receiving invaluable firsthand experience. I encourage any young person who is considering a career in music to get booked onto this fantastic course.”

Participants attending all the workshops will gain Bronze level accreditation through Arts Council England’s prestigious Arts Award programme. Arts Award inspires young people to grow their arts and leadership talents.

The project will also include an opportunity for participants to support the delivery of a gig by critically acclaimed new and emerging band YAK. They will be photographing the gig, recording an interview with the band and will be special guests of GILIL on the night.

The camp is being supported by the library as part of the city’s build up to Coventry being crowned the UK City of Culture in 2021.

While the camp is free, a non-refundable deposit of £5.00 is required to secure your booking. Also due to the nature of the classes, there are only 12 spaces available for the course. So, we advise booking early to avoid disappointment.

Book your place at the camp.
