Library Training Sessions for 2019-20

Training sessions are being held over the next two terms for staff with responsibility for their school’s library or for literacy.

The sessions will help staff learn more about how to improve the library and literacy offer in their school.

Four sessions have been arranged, covering topics such as the ‘Reading Cloud’, ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing’, ‘Running the Primary School Library’, and ‘Exploring Jargon – New Ofsted Framework.

All sessions run from 1pm-3.30pm and will be held in the Central Library Training Room (2nd Floor, ring bell for SLS).

The courses are available to schools in the Coventry area and from outside, and both customer schools and non-customer schools are equally welcome. The SLS Customer price is £40, with a non-SLS Customer Price of £60.

Spring Term 2020

Reading Cloud:
Wednesday 29 January
Learn how to get the most out of your library software. Use it to support not just the efficient running of the school library but wider literacy in the school. The course will cover how to use views and links, weblinks and floorplan, enrolment data, statistics and reports, reminders and how to carry out stocktaking and housekeeping on your database. Plus, an opportunity to ask your own questions!
Suitable for primary school staff.

Running the Primary School Library:
Monday 10 February
This course is designed to help staff with responsibility for the library to learn how to do so effectively. Make your library a positive asset to the school and maximise the learning opportunities that a well-run library can offer. The session will cover a range of practical skills as well as activities and library lessons that can be used with the children. It aims to provide the participants with the knowledge required to develop information skills as well as reading for pleasure.
Suitable for primary school staff.

Exploring Jargon - New Ofsted Framework
Wednesday 11 March
Do you know what Progress 8 is? Does the new Ofsted Framework and new exam grading systems fill you with fear and confusion? Well this training course is for you. It will de-mystify not only all the jargon but also explore the links to literacy and the school library.
Suitable for both primary and secondary school staff.

Summer Term 2020

Mental Health, Wellbeing and Libraries
Wednesday 3 June
Many of us are aware of reports in the Media about the rise in mental health issues amongst young people and this is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. This course will look at how the school library can help support young people in a positive way to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing.
Suitable for both primary and secondary school librarians, teachers, SENCOs and teaching assistants
