City wide funding to increase rough sleeping outreach work

Published Thursday, 30 January 2020

Four more posts to work with rough sleepers are being funded after the Council successfully secured £464k from the government to help address street homelessness.

The money will also be used to extend the existing work of the city’s rough sleeping co-ordinator and two existing outreach workers up until April 2021.

Nursing provision is also likely to be covered along with specific emergency temporary accommodation.

Cllr Tariq Khan, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities said it is an important step in supporting the city’s rough sleeping strategy. He added: “This is excellent news and means that we can continue to build on our work to help and support rough sleepers in the city.

“The funding is needed to support specialist work on drugs and alcohol and mental health. It’s important we approach this in a co-ordinated way and the links between lots of different agencies has been vital.”

The city recently set out it’s rough sleeping strategy, which includes a target to eliminate rough sleeping by 2022.

Cllr Khan added: “Agencies work well together in Coventry and this is encouraging news for all of us. We can provide support and can find other services who can help street homeless. We can offer food and shelter and help to find longer term housing solutions.

“We want people who are in the street to feel valued, but individuals will only engage with organisations when they are ready. We can’t make people take up offers of help – and in many cases we need to be patient.

“We also know that there is lots more to do.”

Agencies in Coventry working to support people sleeping rough have also recently launched an alternative giving scheme called Change into Action.

Every penny of the money donated goes to a rough sleeper. All donations are then held by the local charity Feeding Coventry. It is then used for people in need. When making a donation via the site make sure your select ‘Coventry’ as your recipient city.
