Following the sad death of Councillor Sucha Bains in November 2019, Coventry City Council has now received a request for a by-election to take place.
It means that the Council is bound by law to hold the election within 35 days of receiving a notice from two electors in accordance with the Local Government Act 1972.
The hope was to hold this by-election at the same time as the planned local elections on Thursday 7th May, but the request for a by-election automatically triggers the legal process and there is no flexibility.
The by-election for Upper Stoke ward will be held on Thursday 19 March 2020. The last date for candidates to submit nomination is 4pm on Friday 21 February, after this date a list of candidates will be available.
On Thursday 7 May 2020, alongside the local elections in Coventry, there will be the polls for the Directly Elected Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Police & Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands.
