Coventry venues shortlisted for regional tourism awards

Published Friday, 14 February 2020

Coventry venues are competing against 43 of the biggest names in the industry after being shortlisted in the inaugural West Midlands Tourism Awards 2020.

Coombe Abbey Hotel, Warwick Conferences,  FarGo Village, Coventry Transport Museum’s Esquires Coffee and Turmeric Gold will battle it out in categories such as Large Hotel of the Year, Business Events Venue of the Year, Small Visitor Attraction of the Year and Taste of England.

The awards will celebrate the success of tourism related businesses in the West Midlands, which generated 131 million visitors across the region in 2018, contributing £12.6 billion to its economy. The evening will promote the strength of the business and leisure tourism offer, its venues, people, experiences and accommodation - particularly important as Coventry heads towards City of Culture 2021 and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs and regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that such a wide range of Coventry venues, large and small, have been named as finalists in these new awards. It’s credit to them all that they are in such fine company and its always pleasing to be recognised in the industry and by the industry.

“These venues are well loved by local people but they also play an important role for visitors, helping us to create a vibrant and diverse place people want to visit and spend their money.

“Tourism is a really important contributor to a thriving economy, and as we get ready to welcome over 3 million visitors to Coventry next year for City of Culture, it’s set to be even more important.

“All of the shortlisted venues are already winners to me – but I wish them every success on the night.”

A total of 15 awards will be up for grabs on the evening, with winners and highly commended finalists automatically becoming finalists at the Visit England Awards of Excellence in June 2020.
