Upper Stoke by-election - 19 March 2020

Published Monday, 16 March 2020

The Upper Stoke by-election in Coventry this Thursday (19 March) will take place as planned.

Extra precautions will be taken such as additional cleaning of the polling stations and hand sanitiser being made available on the day. Electors can also use their own pen or pencil to mark the ballot paper if they wish.

On Friday, the Government announced that Local, Combined Authority Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner elections that were due to take place on 7 May this year have been postponed until May 2021. The Upper Stoke by-election will go-ahead as last week’s announcement does not cover by-elections. Legislation is now needed to formally postpone the elections for 12 months. We will provide more details once information becomes clearer.

The Government has advised that the decision was taken following advice from its medical experts in relation to the response to the COVID-19 virus and the advice of those delivering elections.
