A message from the Lord Mayor and the Leader of the Council

Published Thursday, 09 April 2020

Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry, Cllr Linda Bigham, and The Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins, have issued a joint message ahead of the weekend and the celebrations for Easter, Vaisakhi and Passover.

This weekend is an important one for so many of us, and this year, with all the uncertainty and the fear caused by the coronavirus outbreak, it seems even more important than ever.

This is a time when millions around the world celebrate their faith, whether that is at Easter, Passover or Vaisakhi. It is a time when we remember those messages and teachings that are important to us, and it is usually a time when we also gather with loved ones and friends.

Unfortunately, this year our celebrations must be a little different.

We may not be allowed to see family or join with others at our places of worship, but we can still celebrate our faith, and we can still give thanks for our loved ones and for all we still have.

These uncertain times will not last forever.

By being strong even when apart, we can all help to beat this outbreak.

The best way we can show our love and our faith this weekend is by staying at home and following guidelines – that way we are keeping loved ones and friends secure and healthy and we are shortening the time until we can all meet again.

We know the past few weeks have been difficult, and this weekend will be even harder for many, but please stay at home and help to save lives.

The people of our city have responded so well to the social distancing rules and new restrictions and we have seen so many acts of kindness and selflessness.

Whether that is through the dedication of key workers in the NHS, the Council, Emergency Services and many more; or the amazing individual acts where people take the time to help their neighbours and their community, it has been truly heart-warming.

That has shown that we have the strength to carry on as One Coventry and help our city and our country to better days.

Thank you for all you have done so far.

We wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy weekend and we look forward to happier times.

The Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry, Cllr Linda Bigham, and The Leader of Coventry City Council, Cllr George Duggins.
