Summer Reading Challenge heads online with the Silly Squad

Published Friday, 05 June 2020

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge will move online to help Coventry children read six books over the summer holidays.

Coventry libraries runs the Summer Reading Challenge annually, calling for children aged 4 – 11 to sign up to read six or more books over the summer holiday with a series of fun challenges, videos and activities.

Cllr Kevin Maton, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said:

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to help keep children reading over the long summer break, so I’m really pleased that Coventry Libraries are still able to support our local children to get involved online and enjoy some brilliant books.

“This year’s theme has a focus on fun, so it’s another great way to help your children boost their mood and enjoy some light-hearted books and activities at home.”

The theme is ‘Silly Squad’ – a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter.

To take part in Silly Squad:

  • Create a free account on the Silly Squad website.  It’s a simple process and requires approval by an adult (via email).
  • Children taking part in the Challenge this year will be asked to set their own reading goal, but we hope that children will try to read at least six books.
  • Children can rate and review the books they are reading and there will be videos, quizzes and lots of other downloadable treats to encourage children to meet their reading challenge at home.
  • If you don’t want to take part in the Challenge there are still lots of other fun activities on the website for everyone to explore.

Children can join the free virtual challenge on the Silly Squad website

Coventry Libraries have a fantastic selection of free children’s e-books and audio books available on the e-books section of their website.
