A new high quality, segregated cycleway from Coundon to the city centre is being created to help support cycling as a viable alternative to the car and to help improve air quality within the city.
This cycleway will be a dedicated track between the road and pavement separated by kerbs and will encourage more people to take up cycling - to and from work and for other activities - as it provides a safer area for the less confident and less experienced people.
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs and Regeneration, said: “We are creating safer routes for cycling in the city to encourage people to leave the car at home for shorter journeys and commuting for the sake of the air quality in the city and to improve people’s health and wellbeing.
“The cycleway has been designed with safety as the main aim, by physically separating people on cycles from other traffic.”
The cycleway runs from Norman Place Rd to Hill Street in the city centre.
A newsletter that explains about the scheme in more details has been delivered to homes along the route. The project is being consulted on until 5 June.
Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, added: “When people see designs for the cycleway I hope it will persuade people that cycling is a viable alternative to the car for all the family. This is just the beginning of safer, integrated cycling routes throughout the city.”
This will be the first cycleway of its kind in the city and will eventually lead to a network of cycle superhighways across Coventry.
Cllr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport said: “Our communities can definitely benefit from increased health and wellbeing along with better air quality if more of us use greener forms of transport. Cycling is clearly one of these cleaner forms for enjoyment or for travel.“
