Joint statement from Cllr George Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council and Cllr Gary Ridley, Leader of the Opposition Conservative Party, Coventry City Council:
“We congratulate the football club on promotion and the Council as well as the city as a whole are truly delighted to see Coventry City win promotion back to the Championship as Champions of League One. Any other outcome would have been unjust.
“It is a shame that the season came to such an abrupt end and had to be decided in this way, but no-one can deny that the team has fully earned this reward for the exciting and skilful way it has played this season and that Coventry are worthy champions.
“Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 and the social distancing guidelines, the people of the city will not be able to turn out to celebrate in traditional style at this time and show the club just how much this means to us all, but I know there will be thousands celebrating in their homes tonight.
“Hopefully, we will be able to celebrate together soon – and see that great trophy we have all been longing for.”
